"Once I picked it up I did not put it down until I finished. . . . What Schwed has done is capture fully-in deceptively clean language-the lunacy at the heart of the investment business."
-- From the Foreword by Michael Lewis, Bestselling author of Liar's Poker
". . . one of the funniest books ever written about Wall Street."
-- Jane Bryant Quinn, The Washington Post
"How great to have a reissue of a hilarious classic that proves the more things change the more they stay the same. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent."
-- Michael Bloomberg
"It's amazing how well Schwed's book is holding up after fifty-five years. About the only thing that's changed on Wall Street is that computers have replaced pencils and graph paper. Otherwise, the basics are the same. The investor's need to believe somebody is matched by the financial advisor's need to make a nice living. If one of them has to be disappointed, it's bound to be the former."
-- John Rothchild, Author, A Fool and His Money, Financial Columnist, Time magazine
Humorous and entertaining, this book exposes the folly and hypocrisy of Wall Street. The title refers to a story about a visitor to New York who admired the yachts of the bankers and brokers. Naively, he asked where all the customers' yachts were? Of course, none of the customers could afford yachts, even though they dutifully followed the advice of their bankers and brokers. Full of wise contrarian advice and offering a true look at the world of investing, in which brokers get rich while their customers go broke, this book continues to open the eyes of investors to the reality of Wall Street.

Your truly conservative banker cannot be stampeded in to unwary speculations by the hysteria of a boom. He reminds me a little of what I once heard one doctor say of another: "He doesn't know enough medicine to do a patient any harm. " He sits tight through '26, '27, '28. Unfortunately, he begins to come into the market in '29. He begins cautiously enough, like an old maid trying out lipstick in the privacy of her room. (Watching these young whippersnappers make fortunes for three long years does something to the sturdiest character.) But he pulls out again, and, while a nice piece of money is lost, no one is ruined. He apologized to himself for having had a human moment and resumes his thirty-year-old policy of listening attentively and saying "no".
Accounting, some say, is not a science but an art.
...accounting is not even an art, but just a state of mind.
...Bishop Berkeley propounded the classic questions: if a great tree falls in the forest, does it make any noise if no one is there is hear it fall? He decides it doesn't, which for all I know is the right answer. If the Bishop were living today, I believe he would be interested in this question: if a great corporation is toppling over, does it do anyone any financial harm if no one knows that it is toppling over?
Dictatorships always immediately ban short selling, since it is axiomatic with them that no professional pessimits are going to be tolerated. Now whatever the reader may think of totalitarian pilosophy in general, I do not think he will envy them for the condition of their security markets.
